Although returning to school can be exciting, these changes may also cause back-to-school anxiety, especially for children with autism who rely on predictable routines or need additional support with sensory, communication, social, or academic demands.

Back-to-school anxiety in children with autism may appear as worry, difficulty sleeping, physical discomfort, increased requests for reassurance, avoidance, or changes in behavior. A child may not always be able to explain that school is making them anxious, so parents may first notice changes at home.

Fortunately, families do not have to wait until the first day of school to offer support. Gradually rebuilding routines, previewing what will happen, identifying sensory accommodations, and communicating with the school can make the back-to-school transition more predictable.

En esta guía de ABA Centers of Florida, we explain why autism and school anxiety may overlap, which signs families can watch for, and how to help an autistic child prepare for the new school year.

What Is Back-to-School Anxiety?

Back-to-school anxiety refers to the worry, fear, or distress a child may experience before or during the return to school. It is not a diagnosis by itself, and occasional nervousness before a new school year is common.

However, anxiety may require additional attention when it is intense, lasts beyond the initial adjustment period, interferes with sleep or daily activities, or makes it difficult for a child to attend and participate in school.

For children on the spectrum, this anxiety may involve more than returning to academic work. A new school year can mean changes in transportation, teachers, classmates, classrooms, expectations, sensory experiences, and access to familiar supports. Even a child returning to the same school may encounter a very different routine.

¿Por Qué el Regreso a Clases Produce Ansiedad?

Back-to-school anxiety is a common phenomenon among students of all ages, but it can be particularly challenging for individuals with ASD. During summer, wake-up times, meals, therapy appointments, recreation, and bedtime may differ from the school-year schedule.

Returning suddenly to early mornings, transportation, classroom rules, homework, and scheduled transitions can feel overwhelming. Uncertainty about a new teacher, classroom, or daily timetable may add to that distress.

Sensory Demands at School

Fluorescent lighting, bells, crowded hallways, cafeteria smells, classroom conversations, school buses, and unexpected physical contact can be difficult for children with sensory sensitivities.

A child may become anxious not only while experiencing these sensations but also while anticipating them. For example, a child who remembers a loud cafeteria may begin worrying about lunchtime several days before school starts.

Social and Communication Uncertainty

The beginning of a school year often brings unfamiliar classmates, group activities, new communication expectations, and changes in established relationships. An autistic child may be unsure how to ask for help, join an activity, interpret classroom instructions, or respond to peers.

Previous experiences with exclusion, misunderstanding, or bullying may also contribute to back-to-school anxiety. Parents and educators should take these concerns seriously rather than treating avoidance as defiance or a lack of motivation.

Academic Expectations

New subjects, assignments, classroom procedures, and performance expectations can cause anxiety. Some autistic children may need information presented differently, additional processing time, written instructions, movement breaks, or other individualized supports.

A child may also worry about making mistakes, completing work on time, speaking in class, or losing accommodations that were helpful during the previous school year.

Difficulty Communicating What Feels Wrong

Not every child can identify or describe anxiety directly. Some children communicate distress through behavior, movement, withdrawal, repeated questions, physical symptoms, or attempts to avoid a situation.

Instead of asking only, “Why don’t you want to go to school?” parents can explore more specific possibilities: Is the bus too loud? Is the child worried about an unfamiliar teacher? Is lunchtime overwhelming? Do they know where the bathroom is? Does an assignment feel too difficult?

What Are the Signs of Back-to-School Anxiety?

Los signs of school anxiety vary from one child to another. Parents may notice emotional, behavioral, physical, or sleep-related changes in the days or weeks before school begins.

Possible signs include:

Repeated questions about school, teachers, transportation, or schedules

Difficulty falling or staying asleep

Headaches, stomachaches, nausea, or changes in appetite

Increased irritability, crying, withdrawal, or distress

Attempts to avoid school-related conversations or preparation

Greater reliance on familiar routines or reassurance

Increased sensory sensitivity

Difficulty separating from a parent or caregiver

Refusal to get dressed, enter the car, or approach the school

Changes in communication, play, or participation in everyday activities

These signs do not automatically mean a child has an anxiety disorder. They are clues that the child may be experiencing distress and needs help identifying the source.

Parents should also consider whether a physical health concern, bullying, unmet learning needs, an inaccessible environment, or another problem may be contributing. Anxiety should not be assumed to be an unavoidable part of autism.

How Can Parents Reduce Back-to-School Anxiety?

1.
