ABA Therapy for Down Syndrome

Research shows that ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis) therapy, typically known for its benefits to those with autism, can help individuals with Down Syndrome.

Individuals with Down Syndrome can be frustrated by their difficulties in communication, attention, obsessive-compulsive behaviors, aggression, tantrums, repetitive movements, and more. These are all symptoms that ABA therapy can address.

If someone you love has been diagnosed with Down Syndrome, Autism Spectrum Disorder, or both, ABA Centers of Florida can help. Our team features a group of Board Certified Behavior Analysts, Registered Behavior Technicians, and clinical specialists who will help your child develop valuable life skills.

DUAL DIAGNOSIS: DOWN SYNDROME AND AUTISM

Recent data shows that autism may be more common in individuals with Down Syndrome than previously thought. According to the Down Syndrome Resource Foundation, 16-42% of individuals with Down Syndrome also meet the criteria for an autism diagnosis. And unfortunately, children who ultimately receive a dual diagnosis typically receive their autism diagnosis at a later age. The foundation’s research and data also show the average age of an autism diagnosis for a child with Down Syndrome to be about 14 years.

Diagnosing these two conditions are two very different processes. Down Syndrome can be diagnosed by completing a blood test, whereas an autism diagnosis requires the observation of a licensed expert to reach an official conclusion. In either case, the sooner a child receives an official diagnosis, the sooner they can begin to receive custom-tailored treatment that meets their needs. Studies show that the earlier a child receives professional intervention, the more long-term positive results can be achieved.
