What’s New in the BCBA Exam Requirements
As of January 2025, the BCBA exam is now based on the 6th Edition Test Content Outline (TCO). This update replaced the older 5th Edition Task List, marking one of the most significant exam changes in years.
New Structure and Terminology: The familiar “Task List” has evolved into the Test Content Outline, with more precise, action-based language like “identify,” “distinguish,” or “implement.” The goal? To make the test more reflective of real-world application rather than rote memorization.
Expanded Domains: The 6th Edition now includes nine content domains (A–I), expanding certain areas, like Concepts and Principles and Ethical and Professional Issues, to cover more advanced, practical skills.
More Tasks: The total number of discrete tasks has increased to 175, which ensures that the evaluation tests candidates on broader and more complex professional competencies.
BCBA Reinstatement Policies: Starting January 2024, the reinstatement period for BCBA and BCaBA recertification will be limited to 30 days, encouraging professionals to keep their credentials up to date and maintain oversight.
Coursework Expiration: For certification, coursework must now be completed within 10 years before application, ensuring that candidates’ knowledge is current.
Employment Requirements for RBTs: Registered Behavior Technicians (RBTs) and their assessors must be affiliated with the same organization to ensure proper supervision and consistency.
Elimination of Noncertified RBT Supervisor Role: Beginning January 2026, only certified professionals (BCBA/BCaBA) will be allowed to supervise RBTs, ensuring high standards of professional oversight.
Single Certification Policy: Effective January 2025, individuals can hold only one BACB credential at a time, which clarifies roles within therapy teams.
