What Is the RAADS-R Test for Autism?
Los RAADS-R test is an 80-item questionnaire designed to identify autistic traits in adults who may not have received an autism diagnosis earlier in life. Its full name is the Ritvo Autism Asperger Diagnostic Scale-Revised.
The questionnaire asks about current and childhood experiences involving language, social interactions, sensory and motor differences, and focused interests. Although it is sometimes described online as an autism test for adults, the RAADS-R cannot confirm or rule out autism on its own. It was developed to support clinical assessment, not replace one.
Una RAADS-R score of 65 or higher met the screening threshold used in the instrument’s original validation study. However, a result above that threshold does not automatically mean someone is autistic. More recent research has raised concerns about how accurately the questionnaire distinguishes autism from other conditions among adults referred for assessment.
En esta guía de ABA Centers of Florida, we explain how the RAADS-R test for autism works, what its scores mean, its strengths and limitations, and what adults can expect from a comprehensive autism evaluation.
What Is the RAADS-R Test Used For?
The RAADS-R was developed to help clinicians gather information about autistic traits in adults, particularly individuals whose characteristics may have been overlooked or attributed to other explanations earlier in life.
It is an 80-item self-report measure intended for people aged 16 and older. The original research focused on individuals without an intellectual disability, so clinicians must consider whether the instrument is appropriate for the person being evaluated.
The RAADS-R explores experiences that may be associated with autism, including:
- Differences in social communication
- Interpretación literal del lenguaje
- Las sensibilidades sensoriales
- Repetitive or self-regulating movements
- Strong or highly focused interests
- Discomfort with unexpected changes
- Experiences present during childhood as well as adulthood
The questionnaire may give an evaluator useful information, but its findings must be interpreted alongside the person’s developmental history, current functioning, clinical interviews, observations, and other relevant assessments.
Can the RAADS-R Diagnose Autism?
No. The RAADS-R cannot diagnose autism by itself. It is a questionnaire that may support an adult autism assessment, but autism diagnosis requires a qualified professional to evaluate multiple sources of information.
This distinction is important because autistic traits can overlap with experiences associated with anxiety, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, trauma, depression, personality conditions, and other developmental or mental health concerns. A high RAADS-R score does not determine which explanation best accounts for a person’s experiences.
A clinician may consider:
- Developmental and medical history
- Current social and communication experiences
- Sensory patterns and repetitive behaviors
- Information from parents, relatives, partners, or school records, when available and appropriate
- The effect of traits on daily life
- Other developmental or mental health conditions
- Structured interviews or observational assessments
The original RAADS-R validation study described the scale as an aid to clinical diagnosis, not a standalone diagnostic instrument. Current adult autism guidance also supports a broader assessment rather than reliance on a single questionnaire.
Who Is the RAADS-R Test For?
Los RAADS-R test for adults was designed for individuals age 16 and older who may have autistic traits that were not identified during childhood. Some adults begin exploring an assessment after recognizing lifelong patterns in themselves, learning more about autism, or receiving another diagnosis that does not fully explain their experiences.
An adult might consider discussing autism evaluation with a professional if they experience persistent patterns involving:
- Difficulty interpreting indirect communication
- Exhaustion after social interaction
- Sensory sensitivity to sound, light, texture, smell, or touch
- A strong need for predictability
- Distress surrounding unexpected changes
- Highly focused interests
- Repetitive movements or other self-regulating behaviors
- Conscious imitation of social behaviors to fit in
- A long-standing feeling of being socially different
None of these experiences confirms autism. Their developmental history, frequency, context, and impact are essential parts of an assessment.
The RAADS-R is not designed to evaluate young children. Parents concerned about a child’s development should speak with a pediatrician, psychologist, developmental specialist, or another qualified provider about age-appropriate autism screening and evaluation.
How Does the RAADS-R Test Work?
The RAADS-R contains 80 statements. For each one, the respondent chooses among four answers reflecting whether the experience applies now, applied during childhood, applies during both periods, or has never applied.
The answer options are generally structured as:
- True now and when I was young
- True only now
- True only when I was younger than 16
- Nunca verdadero
The specific point value depends on the question because some items use reverse scoring. The points are then combined into a total score ranging from 0 to 240.
The RAADS-R examines four areas:
| RAADS-R domain | Number of items | General focus |
|---|---|---|
| Social relatedness | 39 | Social interaction, relationships and understanding social situations |
| Sensory-motor | 20 | Sensory experiences, movement and regulation |
| Circumscribed interests | 14 | Focused interests, routines and attention to details |
| Lenguaje | 7 | Literal language, conversational patterns and communication experiences |
These domains organize the questionnaire, but their results should not be treated as separate diagnoses or definitive measures of a person’s abilities.
- Ecolalia/Guión Caregivers or educators may note that the individual recites scripted language from films, television, or taglines.
- Intereses mutuos A preference to spend time with people who share interests

- Desafíos con el volumen de la voz talking loudly, too quietly, or fluctuating significantly between both.
- Sensorial sensory seeking, even when the stimulus is painful, dangerous, or overwhelming. These experiences can vary and depend on the circumstances. Additionally, the individual may experience ansiedad en presencia de una sobreestimulación.
Intereses limitados
Los circumscribed interest subscale consists of 14 statements focusing on gauging:
- Intereses especiales : discutirlos constantemente.
What Does a RAADS-R Score Mean?
However, it’s essential to remember that no standalone test can provide a conclusive autism diagnosis without a comprehensive evaluation. The RAADS-R is a tool used during a comprehensive autism assessment, not a definitive or conclusive data point for diagnosis.

One benefit of this test is that it includes self-reporting, making it easier for individuals to identify their symptoms and gain personal insight into their behaviors. Additionally, taking the test can help some discuss their experiences within a clinical setting. Furthermore, the RAADS-R test has proven reliable in identifying ASD symptoms across cognitive abilities, resulting in an effective tool for many clinicians and autism researchers.
Desafíos de la prueba RAADS-R
The RAADS-R test presents some challenges. For example, the test may require individuals to reflect on past experiences and recognize behavioral patterns they may not have identified before, which can be challenging although helpful. Other criticisms of the RAADS-R test include variables like inappropriate referrals or comorbid conditions, which can influence findings.
Additionally, some test questions may be hard to understand, which could lead to confusion or misinterpretation. Despite these challenges, taking the RAADS-R test can help patients better understand their neurodiversity and receive appropriate support. Additionally, it may be a handy aid for individuals who suspect they have autism or simply want to learn more about their learning and personal awareness.
Consejos Para Prepararte para RAADS-R
For some, preparing in advance is helpful to alleviate test-taking anxiety. Some tips for taking the RAADS-R include:
- Become familiar with the test format and questions.

The Challenges of Autism Self-Diagnosis
Many developmental and autism experts advise against self-diagnosis or concluding you or your child has autism at home. While there are early signs to watch for, especially in early childhood, it’s best to work with a clinician to ensure you receive a proper, reliable diagnosis.
En conclusión, utilizar la prueba RAADS-R durante el proceso de diagnóstico del autismo process can be tremendously helpful in identifying and understanding the core features of ASD behavior. Still, it should never be a standalone test and should always be part of a comprehensive autism evaluation. While helpful, it’s essential to understand the test, its scores, and how it may benefit your understanding of yourself before completing it.
